Redness of the local skin after moxibustion
Under normal circumstances, redness of the skin at the local site after moxibustion may be a normal physiological phenomenon, or it could result from being too close to the skin, excessively long moxibustion duration, qi stagnation and blood stasis, or allergic reactions. Different causes require different treatments. Specific analyses are as follows:
1. Normal Physiological Phenomenon
If a patient has poor circulation of qi and blood, the expulsion of dampness from the body after moxibustion may cause skin redness. If there are no other obvious discomforts, this is considered a normal physiological response and does not require special treatment.
2. Too Close to the Skin
If the moxa stick is held too close to the skin during moxibustion, it may cause burns and lead to redness. In such cases, moxibustion should be stopped immediately. It is recommended that each session last no longer than 10 to 15 minutes and that the moxa stick be kept at an appropriate distance from the skin to prevent overheating. Symptoms of redness and swelling will gradually subside. Under medical guidance, topical medications such as silver sulfadiazine cream or moist burn ointment may be used to relieve symptoms.
3. Excessively Long Moxibustion Duration
Appropriate moxibustion time can promote blood circulation, regulate the balance of qi and blood, and enhance the body’s self-repair capacity. However, if moxibustion lasts too long, excessive heat may adversely affect local tissues, potentially causing the aforementioned symptoms. Patients are advised to undergo moxibustion under medical supervision, paying attention to duration and avoiding prolonged sessions.
4. Qi Stagnation and Blood Stasis
Qi stagnation and blood stasis is a concept in traditional Chinese medicine referring to impaired flow or local blockage of qi and blood, which may lead to pain, bruising, or localized edema. If a patient already has qi stagnation and blood stasis, the above-mentioned redness may appear after moxibustion. It is recommended that patients take medications such as Huoxue Zhuangjin Capsules or Shiwei Huoxue Pills as prescribed by a physician.
5. Allergic Reaction
Redness of the local skin after moxibustion may be due to an allergy to mugwort wool or Artemisia leaves, resulting in strong irritation, redness, swelling, and red rashes. In such cases, moxibustion should be discontinued for a period of time. Under medical guidance, oral antihistamines such as ebastine tablets or loratadine tablets may be taken to relieve itching and swelling. Topical applications such as Jingwanhong ointment or mupirocin ointment may also be used as directed.
Patients are advised to seek timely medical attention when experiencing discomfort and receive standardized treatment under professional guidance to facilitate recovery.
