Why is sweat from my scalp flowing down like water?
Under normal circumstances, excessive sweating on the scalp that flows down like water may be related to factors such as intense physical exercise, hypoglycemia, qi deficiency, hyperthyroidism, or autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Patients are advised to seek symptomatic treatment under medical guidance. Specific analyses are as follows:
1. Intense Physical Exercise
Sweat is a fluid secreted by sweat glands controlled by the sympathetic nervous system. After vigorous exercise, patients may experience significant scalp sweating, sometimes soaking the hair, making it appear as if the hair has been washed with water. This is a normal physiological phenomenon. It is recommended that patients rest adequately and maintain a light diet.
2. Hypoglycemia
When blood glucose levels drop, individuals may experience palpitations along with profuse sweating that flows like water. Patients should promptly consume sugary foods such as sweetened drinks, biscuits, or candies.
3. Qi Deficiency
If a patient has been ill for a prolonged period or has a constitutionally weak body, qi deficiency may develop, which can manifest as the aforementioned symptoms, along with thick white tongue coating and facial swelling. Treatment may include medications such as Bu Fei Wan (Lung-Supplementing Pills) or Bai Zi Yang Xin Wan (Biota Seed Heart-Nourishing Pills) as directed by a physician. Additional improvements may be achieved through therapies like moxibustion or massage.
4. Hyperthyroidism
Patients with hyperthyroidism may experience irritability and excessive head sweating that resembles flowing water. Under medical supervision, oral medications such as Xia Ku Cao Granules (Prunella Herb Granules) or Xiao Jin Wan may be used for treatment.
5. Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction
This condition is usually caused by long-term unhealthy lifestyle habits—for example, neurasthenia leading to sleep disorders—which can easily trigger autonomic nervous system imbalance, resulting in excessive sweating. In some cases, this manifests as profuse scalp sweating that soaks the hair, appearing as though it has been rinsed with water. Under medical guidance, patients may take medications such as Wu Ling Jiao Nang (Five-Ling Capsules) or Qing Nao Fu Shen Ye (Clear Brain Restorative Liquid) for treatment.
In daily life, it is important to develop healthy habits and avoid consuming spicy, stimulating foods such as Sichuan pepper, chili peppers, and garlic, as these may hinder recovery.
