Is dilatation of the cystic duct a serious condition?
Choledochal cyst disease is usually quite serious and requires prompt treatment.
The condition primarily results from obstruction of the gallbladder caused by cholecystitis, gallstones, or gallbladder tumors, which prevents bile from draining properly and leads to excessive accumulation within the gallbladder. If not treated promptly, this may cause continuous enlargement of the gallbladder, potentially leading to perforation. This can result in severe pain, accompanied by nausea and vomiting. It may also lead to infection and acute suppurative peritonitis, or even septic shock in patients; therefore, it is considered a serious condition.
Patients with choledochal cyst disease are advised to seek timely medical evaluation at a hospital to determine the exact underlying cause and receive appropriate, targeted treatment.
