Introduction
In general, soft toenails that peel off in layers may be caused by exposure to chemicals, trauma, calcium deficiency, iron-deficiency anemia, or onychomycosis (fungal nail infection). They could also result from diseases such as lichen planus or scleroderma. Without a clear diagnosis, patients are advised to seek timely medical evaluation to identify the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment to avoid delaying recovery.

Generally speaking, soft toenails that peel off in layers may be caused by exposure to chemicals, trauma, calcium deficiency, iron-deficiency anemia, onychomycosis (fungal nail infection), and other factors. If patients experience additional discomfort, timely medical consultation and targeted treatment are recommended. The specific causes are analyzed as follows:

1. Exposure to Chemical Substances

When toenails are excessively exposed to water or frequently come into contact with detergents and other chemicals, they may become soft and start peeling. Prolonged soaking, frequent washing, or improper use of cleaning agents can weaken the structure of the toenails, leading to softening. It is recommended that patients avoid prolonged immersion in water and keep their toenails dry.

2. Trauma

If proper toenail care is neglected and the area suffers physical impact, toenail damage may occur, resulting in layering or splitting. If the injury is mild, maintaining proper local care usually allows for spontaneous recovery over time. For more severe symptoms, medications such as calcium carbonate granules or calcium gluconate oral solution may be taken under a doctor's guidance.

3. Calcium Deficiency

Picky eating or restrictive diets may lead to insufficient vitamin D levels, causing calcium deficiency. This can impair normal nail development and growth, resulting in soft, easily peeled toenails due to poor nail nutrition. Patients are advised to consume more calcium-rich foods such as dairy products, eggs, and dried shrimp. In cases of severe calcium deficiency, supplements like calcium carbonate D3 tablets or calcium gluconate tablets may be used under medical supervision.

4. Iron-Deficiency Anemia

Iron-deficiency anemia—caused by inadequate iron intake or excessive iron loss—can also lead to toenail abnormalities, including thinning, brittleness, and breakage. As a result, toenails may become soft and peel off easily. Patients should increase their intake of iron-rich foods such as pork blood, duck blood, pork liver, and duck liver. In severe cases, iron supplements such as ferrous sulfate tablets or ferrous gluconate oral solution may be prescribed by a doctor.

5. Onychomycosis (Fungal Nail Infection)

Poor foot hygiene or prolonged wearing of non-breathable footwear may lead to fungal infection of the toenails (onychomycosis), causing discoloration, shrinkage, thinning, and softening of the nails. Some patients may notice their toenails becoming very soft and peeling off easily. Treatment may include topical antifungal medications such as terbinafine hydrochloride cream or compound ketoconazole cream, applied under medical guidance.

In addition to the above, soft, layered toenails may also be caused by conditions such as lichen planus or scleroderma. If the underlying cause remains unclear, patients are advised to seek prompt medical evaluation to avoid delayed diagnosis and treatment.
