Introduction
Frequent eye blinking in children may be caused by eye fatigue, imitation habits, refractive errors, conjunctivitis, tic disorders, or other reasons. To prevent these issues, avoid prolonged focusing on close-up objects, regularly encourage the child to look into the distance or close their eyes to rest, reduce eye strain, ensure the child gets sufficient sleep, and maintain a balanced diet. These measures can help prevent and improve the aforementioned eye problems.

Generally, frequent blinking in children may be caused by eye fatigue, imitation habits, refractive errors, conjunctivitis, or tic disorders. If discomfort occurs, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly. Specific causes are analyzed as follows:

1. Eye Fatigue

Eye fatigue usually results from children focusing on close-up objects—such as electronic screens or books—for prolonged periods. This keeps the eyes in a state of tension, leading to muscle fatigue. Blinking may occur as a way to relieve this fatigue. It is advised to take breaks after extended periods of visual work by looking into the distance or closing the eyes, and ensuring sufficient sleep to alleviate eye strain.

2. Imitation Habit

Children are in a stage of learning through imitation. If someone around them frequently blinks, they may unconsciously mimic this behavior, resulting in habitual blinking. Parents should gently remind the child to be aware of their actions and redirect their attention to prevent prolonged focus on blinking behaviors.

3. Refractive Errors

Refractive errors occur due to abnormalities in the shape of the eyeball or axial length, causing improper focusing of light and blurred vision. Frequent blinking may be an attempt to see objects more clearly, often accompanied by symptoms such as eye fatigue and headaches. A medical eye examination (refraction test) can determine the type and severity of the refractive error. Corrective eyewear—such as myopia glasses, hyperopia glasses, or astigmatism glasses—can then be prescribed.

4. Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the eye caused by bacterial, viral, or other microbial infections. The inflammation causes eye discomfort, prompting children to blink frequently to relieve the sensation. Symptoms may also include redness, swelling, and pain. Treatment under medical guidance may include eye drops such as tobramycin, levofloxacin, or acyclovir.

5. Tic Disorders

Tic disorders are neurological conditions potentially linked to genetic and environmental factors. They cause involuntary muscle contractions, including those of the eye muscles, leading to persistent blinking. Other symptoms may include facial twitching or neck tics. Treatment, as prescribed by a doctor, may involve medications such as tiapride hydrochloride tablets, haloperidol tablets, or clonidine hydrochloride tablets.

Parents should monitor their child's visual habits, avoid prolonged near-work activities, and encourage regular breaks involving distant viewing or eye closure to reduce eye strain.
