What causes peeling skin on the soles of the feet?
In general, peeling skin on the soles of the feet may be caused by dryness and dehydration, prolonged wearing of closed shoes and socks, friction injuries, athlete's foot (tinea pedis), eczema, or other conditions. It is recommended to seek timely medical attention and receive symptomatic treatment under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Specific causes are analyzed as follows:
1. Dryness and Dehydration
In dry winter months or low-humidity environments, the skin on the soles of the feet can easily peel due to lack of moisture. Maintain proper foot hygiene and regularly apply moisturizing creams or lotions to help lock in hydration.
2. Prolonged Wearing of Closed Shoes and Socks
Wearing non-breathable footwear for extended periods can prevent sweat from evaporating, leading to damp feet and subsequent peeling. Opt for socks made of breathable materials such as cotton or other natural fibers, and change into clean socks daily.
3. Friction Injury
Extended walking or standing, or wearing ill-fitting shoes, can subject the skin on the soles to prolonged friction and pressure, resulting in peeling. Consider using soft insoles to reduce friction inside the shoes.
4. Athlete's Foot (Tinea Pedis)
Athlete’s foot is caused by a fungal infection. The fungi invade the stratum corneum, damaging the skin barrier and triggering an inflammatory response, which leads to flaking skin on the soles. This may be accompanied by redness, itching, and other symptoms. Patients may use antifungal medications such as ketoconazole cream, terbinafine gel, or itraconazole capsules under medical supervision.
5. Eczema
Eczema may arise due to a weakened immune system or allergic reactions to external irritants, causing skin inflammation. Peeling on the soles may occur, often accompanied by intense itching and red patches. Patients are advised to use medications such as hydrocortisone cream, mometasone furoate cream, or danpi phenol ointment as directed by a physician to relieve symptoms.
To prevent peeling and other foot problems, maintain clean and dry feet, wear breathable and comfortable footwear, avoid prolonged standing or walking, and perform regular foot moisturizing care.
