Can you drink black coffee before exercising on an empty stomach?
Generally, it is not recommended to drink black coffee before exercising on an empty stomach.
On an empty stomach, there is no food in the stomach to act as a buffer. Consuming black coffee directly may irritate the gastric mucosa due to its caffeine content, leading to excessive gastric acid secretion and causing discomfort such as stomach pain, bloating, acid reflux, and nausea. In severe cases, it may result in gastric mucosal erosion or adversely affect systemic blood circulation and cardiac load.
However, for individuals with a high tolerance to caffeine, drinking a small amount of black coffee before light or short-duration exercise on an empty stomach might not cause significant discomfort. This is because the caffeine in black coffee can stimulate the central nervous system, increase heart rate and metabolic rate, and thereby enhance exercise performance and endurance.
It is recommended to maintain a healthy lifestyle, ensure adequate sleep, improve dietary habits, adjust physical condition, and promote overall health.
