Which acupoint is most effective for removing dampness when using moxibustion?
Generally, there is no such thing as "which part to moxibustion for the best dampness removal." However, moxibustion on certain acupoints—such as Zusanli (ST36), Guanyuan (CV4), Zhongwan (CV12), Fenglong (ST40), and Yinlingquan (SP9)—is commonly used to help eliminate dampness.
1. Zusanli (ST36): Moxibustion at Zusanli strengthens the spleen and stomach functions, enhancing their ability to transform and transport body fluids and dampness. When spleen and stomach functions improve, the body's metabolism of dampness increases, thereby achieving a dampness-removing effect.
2. Guanyuan (CV4): Applying moxibustion to Guanyuan helps regulate the balance of qi, blood, yin, and yang in the body and enhances the body’s vital energy (zheng qi). Sufficient vital energy aids in expelling dampness and pathogenic factors from the body.
3. Zhongwan (CV12): When spleen and stomach functions are normal, food and fluids are properly transformed and transported, preventing the accumulation of dampness. In cases where excessive consumption of raw, cold, or greasy foods leads to internal dampness, moxibustion at Zhongwan can restore digestive function and promote the transformation and elimination of dampness.
4. Fenglong (ST40): Moxibustion at Fenglong enhances the spleen and stomach’s transformation and transportation functions, promoting normal metabolism of dampness. It also helps resolve phlegm, making it effective for conditions caused by dampness congealing into phlegm, such as chronic cough with excessive sputum and obesity.
5. Yinlingquan (SP9): Moxibustion at Yinlingquan strengthens the spleen’s ability to transform and transport dampness, promotes diuresis, and effectively removes dampness, reduces swelling, and alleviates diarrhea.
When performing moxibustion, ensure the treated area is clean and free of wounds, inflammation, or skin growths. Pay attention to the temperature during treatment to avoid burns; if excessive heat is felt, adjust the distance of the moxa promptly.
