How to use moxa sticks
Generally, moxibustion sticks can be used with various techniques including mild warming moxibustion, sparrow pecking moxibustion, rotary moxibustion, direct moxibustion, and barrier moxibustion. Details are as follows:

1. Mild Warming Moxibustion: Light one end of the moxibustion stick and hold it steadily about 2–3 cm above the selected acupoint or area until the skin turns reddish and a warm sensation is felt. For patients with impaired sensation, the practitioner should place their fingers near the treated area to monitor the temperature and prevent burns.
2. Sparrow Pecking Moxibustion: Light one end of the moxibustion stick and move it up and down above the skin of the treated area like a bird pecking, maintaining a distance of 2–3 cm until the skin becomes reddish. The practitioner should control the speed and frequency of the movement to avoid burning the skin.
3. Rotary Moxibustion: After lighting one end of the moxibustion stick, hold it approximately 2–3 cm away from the skin and move it from side to side or rotate it repeatedly until the skin reddens. The practitioner must maintain steady hand movements to avoid direct contact between the stick and the skin, which could cause burns.
4. Direct Moxibustion: Place a moxa cone directly on the treatment area and ignite it. This method usually requires covering the treatment site with several layers of gauze or paper to prevent burns. After lighting the moxa cone, place it on the gauze or paper and remove it once the patient feels a burning sensation or pain. Direct moxibustion is highly stimulating and typically used for specific acupoints under the guidance of a physician.
5. Barrier Moxibustion: Place the moxibustion stick on a medium such as ginger slices, salt, or other materials before applying it to the treatment area. This method reduces the intensity of the heat and is suitable for patients with sensitive skin or those requiring gentler treatment. Choose an appropriate medium and moxibustion stick to ensure even heat conduction.
When using moxibustion sticks, select a comfortable and safe position and treatment area. During the moxibustion process, remain focused and closely monitor the patient's response.
