Introduction
A dry cough (i.e., cough without phlegm) commonly indicates a “wind-heat” type of cough, which results from external invasion by wind-heat pathogens and subsequent impairment of the lung’s dispersing and descending functions. In such cases, phlegm tends to be thick and viscous, making it difficult to expel—hence the presentation of a non-productive cough. Additionally, fever is often pronounced and frequently accompanied by sore throat and pharyngeal swelling. Therefore, treatment focused on clearing heat and eliminating toxins is critically important.

A dry cough—i.e., coughing without phlegm—is often indicative of “wind-heat cough,” a condition commonly caused by external invasion of wind-heat pathogens, leading to impaired lung qi dispersion. In such cases, phlegm tends to be thick and viscous, making it difficult to expel, thereby resulting in a dry, non-productive cough.

Additionally, fever is typically pronounced and often accompanied by sore throat and pharyngeal swelling. Thus, treatment focused on clearing heat and eliminating toxins is essential. Cooling herbs or formulations—such as Pudilan Anti-inflammatory Oral Liquid or Lanqin Oral Liquid—may be prescribed.

If the cough is severe, antitussive and expectorant medications should also be administered to facilitate phlegm expulsion and alleviate cough symptoms. Recommended options include Feilike Oral Solution, Compound Fresh Bamboo Juice Liquid, or Niuhuang She Dan Chuanbei Liquid—all of which are effective for wind-heat cough.

It is also important to drink ample water to promote the elimination of toxins from the body, thereby aiding recovery from cough. Consuming plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables helps strengthen immunity and supports disease resolution.
