Introduction
Common adverse reactions following vaccination include local skin redness, induration, and abscesses. If the induration is painful, cold compresses may help alleviate discomfort. Currently, COVID-19 vaccines available include inactivated vaccines, adenovirus vector vaccines, and recombinant subunit vaccines—each requiring a distinct vaccination schedule. Vaccination remains the most effective preventive measure against COVID-19; active immunization significantly reduces the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and helps establish herd immunity, thereby interrupting person-to-person transmission of the virus. Additionally, some individuals may experience systemic symptoms such as fever, chills, or upper respiratory tract infection-like manifestations—including sneezing and rhinorrhea. After vaccination, it is advisable to drink plenty of water, get adequate rest, and maintain a light diet while closely monitoring for any unusual symptoms. Should fever, local redness, swelling, or pain develop post-vaccination—or if an individual develops high fever (≥38.5°C) or persistent fever lasting several days—prompt medical evaluation at a healthcare facility is recommended.

Knowledge Extension: Key Considerations After Receiving a COVID-19 Vaccine

1. Observation

After vaccination, recipients must remain under observation at the vaccination site for 30 minutes. During this period, if any of the following symptoms occur—pallor, diaphoresis, cold and clammy extremities, rash, weak and rapid pulse, cyanosis, facial or pharyngeal swelling, or respiratory distress—immediate medical assistance from on-site healthcare personnel should be sought. Used gauze pads should be disposed of in designated medical waste bins or yellow biohazard bags.

2. Post-Vaccination Care

The injection site should not be pressed with alcohol-soaked cotton balls; instead, apply gentle pressure with a dry cotton ball for one minute. Keep the injection site dry, and avoid bathing on the day of vaccination. Since the puncture wound may increase susceptibility to localized skin infection or inflammation, bathing is best deferred until at least 24 hours post-vaccination. Furthermore, administration of other inactivated vaccines should be avoided within 14 days of receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.

3. Dietary Considerations

Due to individual variability, some people may experience transient side effects such as fever, fatigue, nausea, or headache after vaccination. To minimize symptom exacerbation, avoid known personal allergens and common allergens for one week post-vaccination. Refrain from alcohol consumption and limit intake of spicy, stimulating, or seafood-based foods. Instead, opt for a bland, easily digestible diet and ensure adequate hydration.
