What to Do in Case of Sudden Myocardial Infarction
Acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) requires immediate first-aid measures, including cessation of all activity, calling emergency services, maintaining a comfortable body position, closely monitoring the patient’s condition, and ensuring on-site safety. Incorrect interventions may worsen the condition; therefore, never attempt unguided or inappropriate actions. Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms suggestive of a heart attack occur.
1. Immediately cease all activity: Upon symptom onset, stop all physical movement—do not walk or exert yourself. Sit or rest in a semi-recumbent position to minimize cardiac oxygen demand. Forcibly continuing activity exacerbates myocardial ischemia, expands the area of myocardial necrosis, and significantly increases the risk of clinical deterioration.
2. Call emergency services immediately: Contact emergency medical services without delay, clearly stating your exact location and the patient’s primary symptoms. Do not attempt to drive the patient to the hospital yourself. While awaiting emergency responders, avoid moving the patient unnecessarily, as this may delay life-saving treatment. Timeliness of intervention is directly linked to prognosis in myocardial infarction.

3. Maintain a comfortable position: Adjust the patient’s posture according to their symptoms: adopt a semi-recumbent position for chest tightness or shortness of breath; lie flat if experiencing dizziness or profound weakness. Loosen collars, belts, or other restrictive clothing to ensure unobstructed breathing. Do not administer water or food indiscriminately, as this risks aspiration and coughing, and adds unnecessary physiological burden.
4. Closely monitor the patient’s condition: Continuously observe consciousness level and respiratory status. If the patient loses consciousness or exhibits abnormal breathing, prepare to initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Do not administer any medications—including aspirin or nitroglycerin—unless specifically instructed by a healthcare professional, as inappropriate use may introduce additional health risks.
5. Ensure on-site safety and support: Maintain adequate ventilation in the surrounding environment. Calm the patient to alleviate anxiety and stress-induced tachycardia. Clear away nearby obstacles to facilitate rapid access and intervention by emergency personnel. Avoid crowding around the patient, which may impede airflow and hinder rescue efforts.
For daily prevention: avoid tobacco and alcohol; limit intake of high-fat and high-salt foods; maintain emotional stability; prevent excessive physical exertion and chronic sleep deprivation; and regularly monitor blood pressure and lipid levels—to collectively reduce the risk of acute cardiovascular events.
