Introduction
1. Eliminate the underlying cause—such as fungal infection, trichomoniasis, or diabetes. 2. Pharmacological treatment: Conventional (Western) medications are an effective means of rapidly relieving pruritus. 3. Maintain proper hygiene: Keep the external genitalia clean and dry; wash daily with plain water only—avoid soap or alkaline solutions, which may disrupt the natural vaginal flora.

In general, vaginal itching accompanied by white, curd-like discharge in females is primarily suggestive of vulvovaginal candidiasis (yeast infection). In such cases, a vaginal swab should be collected for routine vaginal secretion examination to determine whether Candida infection is present—and specifically, whether fungal hyphae are observed. So, what should be done when a female experiences vaginal itching with white, curd-like discharge? Below, we address this question.

What to do when experiencing vaginal itching with white, curd-like discharge

1. Identify and eliminate the underlying cause

If the condition is caused by Candida infection, trichomoniasis, or underlying conditions such as diabetes mellitus, a gynecological examination and routine vaginal discharge test should be performed at a hospital. Once the specific pathogen is identified, appropriate antimicrobial therapy should be initiated accordingly. Additionally, during episodes of pruritus vulvae, patients should avoid consuming “heat-inducing” foods and spicy or irritating foods—such as fish, shellfish, shrimp, and chili peppers—to prevent exacerbation of vulvovaginal inflammation and itching. Instead, a light, balanced diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables is recommended.

2. Pharmacologic treatment

Topical Western medications offer an effective and rapid means of relieving pruritus. However, drug selection must be tailored to the individual’s clinical presentation. Commonly prescribed topical ointments for vaginal pruritus include erythromycin ointment and Duobang ointment. Additionally, patients may use external genital cleansing solutions to alleviate vulvar itching. These washes possess antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, thereby helping to control itching.

3. Maintain proper hygiene

It is essential to keep the external genitalia clean and dry. Daily cleansing with plain water is recommended; avoid using soap or alkaline solutions, which may disrupt the natural vaginal flora. Furthermore, choose breathable, 100% cotton underwear and avoid tight-fitting pants, as these can trap moisture and heat—creating an environment conducive to bacterial overgrowth and subsequent pruritus. Finally, maintaining a positive emotional state and reducing stress or anxiety also contributes to symptom relief.

The above outlines management strategies for vaginal itching accompanied by white, curd-like discharge. We hope this information proves helpful.
