Introduction
1. Pruritus: Vulvar pruritus is a common symptom of vulvitis. Potential causes include pathogen infection, allergic reactions of the skin or mucosa, and hyperkeratosis (thickening) of the skin or mucosa. 2. Dyspareunia: When folliculitis or abscesses develop in the vulvar region, significant swelling and pain occur, potentially leading to furuncle formation.

Women are highly susceptible to gynecological disorders for various reasons, and vulvitis is a classic example. This condition may occur independently or concurrently with vaginitis. Given its high incidence rate, early recognition and timely, targeted treatment are essential—requiring familiarity with the characteristic symptoms of vulvitis. So, what are the symptoms of vulvitis? Let’s take a closer look.

What Are the Symptoms of Vulvitis?

1. Itching

Pruritus (itching) of the skin is a common symptom of vulvitis. It may result from pathogen infection, allergic reactions involving the skin or mucosa, or hyperkeratosis (abnormal thickening of the outer skin layer). Topical anti-itch ointments or gentle cleansing with warm water may provide symptomatic relief. However, patients should adopt appropriate therapeutic measures and maintain local skin cleanliness and dryness.

2. Pain During Intercourse

When folliculitis or abscesses develop in the vulvar region, significant swelling and pain often ensue, potentially progressing to furuncles (boils). These complications may cause dysuria (painful urination) and dyspareunia (pain during sexual intercourse).

3. Increased Vaginal Discharge

Vulvar inflammation accelerates local tissue metabolism, stimulating heightened secretion from surrounding glands. Clinically, this manifests as copious purulent or mucoid discharge. Additionally, affected women commonly exhibit varying degrees of swelling and erythema (redness) of the vulvar skin and mucosa. In severe cases, erosions, ulcers, or extensive eczematous changes may develop.

4. Papules

Vulvitis may also present with red papules on the skin or mucosa. These raised lesions feel granular upon palpation and are frequently accompanied by localized erythema and congestion. They arise from cellular degeneration in the vulvar skin or mucosa triggered by infection with pathogenic microorganisms or by allergenic or irritant stimuli.

The above outlines the key clinical manifestations of vulvitis. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
