What Causes Redness at the Outer Corners of a Child’s Eyes?
Redness appearing suddenly on the outer skin near a child’s outer canthus (eye corner) is unfamiliar to many mothers. Some, anxious and desperate, resort to inappropriate remedies—randomly applying ointments or cosmetics in an attempt to mask the redness. This approach is strongly discouraged. Instead, identifying the underlying cause of the redness is essential for effective, targeted treatment. So, what causes redness at a child’s outer canthus?

What Causes Redness at a Child’s Outer Canthus?
Redness at a child’s outer canthus may result from conditions such as conjunctivitis or subconjunctival hemorrhage. Treatment—either oral or topical—should be tailored to the specific underlying cause.
1. Conjunctivitis: Most commonly caused by poor ocular hygiene—for instance, rubbing the eyes with unwashed hands—leading to bacterial or viral infection. Typical symptoms include eye redness, swelling, dryness, itching, and pain. For bacterial conjunctivitis, topical levofloxacin eye drops are recommended. For viral conjunctivitis, acyclovir eye drops may be used; alternatively, oral amoxicillin granules may help control inflammation.
2. Subconjunctival hemorrhage: May occur due to increased intraocular pressure from nausea/vomiting, severe coughing, sneezing, or constipation, resulting in rupture of small blood vessels beneath the conjunctiva and subsequent redness near the outer canthus. After 24 hours, warm compresses can promote absorption of the hemorrhage. Topical erythromycin eye ointment may also be applied locally to prevent secondary infection.
During recovery, maintain strict ocular hygiene and avoid rubbing the eyes with hands.
Redness at a baby’s outer canthus may range from mild and self-limiting to indicative of a more serious condition. If the redness persists beyond several days without improvement, consult experienced mothers for advice—or better yet, seek guidance from pediatric or ophthalmologic specialists—to ensure prompt and appropriate care for your baby’s swift recovery.
