Introduction
1. Nipple Eczema: This refers to eczema occurring specifically on the nipple. It may result from local moisture and excessive sweating of the nipple, prolonged wearing of tight-fitting clothing, or contact with certain irritants or allergens. 2. Mastitis: This condition is commonly associated with bacterial infection secondary to milk stasis; it may also be caused by breast trauma or autoimmune factors.

Although breastfeeding is medically recommended, longer duration is not necessarily better—everything has two sides. Mothers should wean their babies at an appropriate time. However, some women experience nipple itching after weaning. So, what causes nipple itching post-weaning? Let’s explore this further.

What Causes Nipple Itching After Weaning?

1. Nipple Eczema

Nipple eczema refers to eczema localized specifically to the nipple area. It may result from local moisture and excessive sweating, prolonged wearing of tight-fitting clothing, or contact with certain irritants or allergens. Symptoms following weaning may include nipple itching, papules, erosion, and pain. Under a physician’s guidance, antihistamine medications—such as chlorpheniramine maleate tablets or loratadine tablets—may be prescribed for treatment.

2. Mastitis

Mastitis commonly occurs in first-time mothers due to inadequate breastfeeding techniques, leading to milk stasis and subsequent bacterial infection. It may also arise from breast trauma or autoimmune factors. Clinical manifestations include erythema, swelling, warmth, and tenderness of the breast skin, along with nipple itching after weaning. Treatment typically involves antibiotics such as cefixime capsules or azithromycin capsules. If an abscess develops, percutaneous needle aspiration and drainage are required.
