Introduction
Smegma refers to a grayish, curd-like, clumpy substance that forms over time between the inner surface of the foreskin and the glans penis. It occurs in individuals with phimosis—i.e., an excessively long or tight foreskin that prevents the glans from being naturally exposed. Poor hygiene and inadequate cleaning allow debris and secretions to accumulate in this space. When infection is present, smegma may emit a foul odor.

The accumulation of smegma significantly impacts men’s health. Many men are unaware of how to properly clean smegma, leading to serious adverse effects on their physical well-being. So, how should smegma be cleaned correctly?

How to Clean Smegma Properly

If you have a foreskin, gently retract it daily and soak the area in warm water. Use your hands to softly cleanse both the inner surface of the foreskin and the glans penis. Perform this cleaning twice daily. Before handling the foreskin, wash your hands thoroughly with soap to prevent bacterial contamination. Use only warm—not hot—water to avoid scalding. This routine effectively removes smegma and helps maintain penile hygiene.

Smegma refers to a whitish, curd-like, grayish substance that accumulates beneath an overly long foreskin—i.e., when the foreskin is excessively redundant and the glans cannot be fully exposed naturally. Poor hygiene allows debris and secretions to accumulate between the inner foreskin surface and the glans. Over time, this builds up into clumpy, cheese-like deposits known as smegma. When infection is present, smegma may emit a foul odor. Chronic inflammatory stimulation can cause partial or complete adhesion between the inner foreskin and the glans, resulting in phimosis. Prolonged smegma accumulation may lead to balanitis (inflammation of the glans) in mild cases; in severe, long-standing cases, it may increase the risk of penile cancer. Moreover, smegma not only adversely affects male genital health but may also contribute to cervical cancer in female sexual partners.

Indeed, if phimosis is confirmed, early circumcision is recommended to reduce disease risk factors. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
