Introduction
Patients with high blood glucose should avoid sweet wine, as it is extremely high in calories and can cause further elevation of blood glucose levels. Sweet wine is primarily produced through the fermentation of grains, and these calories are difficult to metabolize. In patients with diabetes, alcohol consumption may induce vasodilation, which is detrimental to the control of blood pressure, blood lipids, and blood glucose. Patients with kidney disease may consume *lao* (fermented glutinous rice).

In daily life, some people enjoy drinking “laozao”—a sweet fermented rice wine—particularly popular among women. Some patients with diabetic nephropathy also enjoyed consuming it prior to their diagnosis. So, can patients with diabetic nephropathy drink laozao?

Can patients with diabetic nephropathy drink laozao?

Patients with elevated blood glucose levels should avoid sweet alcoholic beverages. Sweet wines are high in calories and may cause further increases in blood glucose. They are primarily produced through grain fermentation, and these calories are difficult for the body to metabolize. Alcohol consumption in diabetic patients may induce vasodilation, thereby adversely affecting control of blood pressure, blood lipids, and blood glucose. Patients with kidney disease, however, may consume laozao in moderation. Most commonly, “kidney disease” refers to chronic kidney disease (CKD), i.e., chronic renal failure. At this stage, dietary management emphasizes low-protein intake, along with low-salt, low-fat, and low-purine foods, while ensuring adequate intake of high-quality protein.

Diabetic patients must strictly regulate their diet: avoid foods high in sugar, such as sodas, cola, candied fruits, and Western pastries. Also, limit intake of starchy foods—including sweet potatoes, potatoes, mung beans, and corn. Diabetic diets should be light and bland; avoid raw or cold foods, spicy or greasy dishes, and, whenever possible, seafood. Otherwise, the condition may worsen. During disease progression, patients must cultivate healthy lifestyle and dietary habits.

In daily life, individuals with diabetes should pay close attention to nutritional supplementation and food selection, avoiding high-sugar and high-calorie foods to prevent worsening of diabetes and its adverse impact on daily functioning and overall health.
