Commonly known as “fish bladder,” fish maw serves as a depth regulator for swimming fish—and functions like a “life jacket” during locomotion. By inflating or deflating, it adjusts the fish’s specific gravity, enabling the fish to maintain stable buoyancy in water with minimal muscular effort. However, when a fish descends beyond a certain depth, immense external pressure prevents further regulation of the swim bladder’s volume. At this point, its buoyancy falls below its body weight, causing it to sink involuntarily to the seabed. Unable to resurface, the fish ultimately suffocates and dies.
