The reasons are as follows: When a person has not ejaculated for an extended period—such as one month or even several months—the ejaculate may appear yellow and gelatinous, which is considered normal. However, if a person maintains regular sexual activity and ejaculation yet still produces yellow or gelatinous semen, this is likely due to prostatic inflammation impairing semen liquefaction.
Sperm are present in male semen. They are extremely small—so tiny that they are invisible to the naked eye and can only be observed under a microscope. When people refer to “yellow sperm” in men, they are actually referring to yellowish semen. So, what causes semen to appear yellow?
What Causes Yellow Semen in Men?
There are primarily two reasons why semen may appear yellow, as detailed below:
1. Prolonged abstinence: If a man has not ejaculated for an extended period—such as one month or even several months—the expelled semen may appear yellow and gelatinous (jelly-like). This is generally considered a normal physiological phenomenon resulting from prolonged abstinence.
2. Regular sexual activity with persistent yellow semen: If a man maintains regular sexual activity and ejaculation yet still produces yellow, gelatinous semen, this may indicate impaired seminal liquefaction due to prostatitis.
During prostatic inflammation, the prostate’s ability to liquefy semen diminishes, which may cause semen to appear yellow. When combined with other symptoms—such as urinary frequency, urgency, or dysuria—a diagnosis of prostatitis-induced yellow, gelatinous semen can be confirmed, and pharmacological treatment is warranted.
Normal semen is typically grayish-white or milky-white. Persistent discoloration—such as yellow or reddish semen—indicates abnormal semen quality and warrants further investigation to identify the underlying pathological condition. We hope this information is helpful to you!
