What Medications Should Women Take During Menopause?
The female menopausal transition is a natural phase of physiological decline; not all women require medication during this period. So, what medications are appropriate for women experiencing menopause?
What Medications Are Used During Female Menopause?
Women whose menopausal symptoms severely impair daily functioning—such as those suffering from severe insomnia, marked irritability or mood swings, or excessively impulsive behavior—may consider pharmacological intervention under the guidance of a specialist physician. Treatment generally comprises etiological (cause-directed) therapy and symptomatic therapy.

Etiological therapy: Primarily involves oral administration of estrogenic agents such as estradiol valerate, hydroxyprogesterone, and limonene. These help replenish endogenous estrogen levels and thereby indirectly alleviate menopausal symptoms. However, long-term use of hormonal medications may increase the risk of gynecological malignancies. Women with preexisting gynecological tumors—including uterine fibroids—must avoid these medications unless the tumor has been surgically removed. Symptomatic therapy: For severe insomnia, sedative-hypnotic agents such as azapirones (e.g., tandospirone) or estazolam may be prescribed. For pronounced palpitations and irritability, gamma-oryzanol can help regulate autonomic nervous system function. In cases of worsening osteoporosis, joint pain, or even fractures, calcium supplementation and bisphosphonates (e.g., zoledronic acid) are recommended.

For menopausal women primarily experiencing hot flashes, irritability, palpitations, and restlessness, traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) that nourish yin and clear heat—such as Zuogui Wan (Rehmannia Six Formula with Cornus and Lycium), Kunbao Wan (Female Treasure Pill), and Zhibai Dihuang Wan (Anemarrhena, Phellodendron, and Rehmannia Pill)—are recommended. For those presenting predominantly with fatigue, excessive sweating, and shortness of breath, qi-tonifying TCMs such as Shengmai Yin (Life-Pulse Decoction) are advised. For frequent dreaming and easy awakening at night, sleep-promoting formulas such as Bailing Mian (Hundred-Happiness Sleep Aid) or Suanzaoren Anshen Ye (Jujube Seed Calming Liquid) may be considered.
