Introduction
Post-scarlet fever complications primarily include pneumonia, endocarditis, myocarditis, and suppurative tonsillitis. Symptoms of pharyngitis and pneumonia mainly consist of cough, sputum production, chest pain, dyspnea, chest tightness, and wheezing. Endocarditis and myocarditis may also cause chest pain, and sometimes present with generalized muscle and joint aches, fatigue, dizziness, headache, and fever.

Scarlet fever is a systemic, acute respiratory infectious disease characterized by widespread, diffuse, red maculopapular rash. It is caused by infection with Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is termed “lan hou sha” (throat-rotting scarlet fever). So, what are the sequelae or complications of scarlet fever?

What Are the Symptoms of Scarlet Fever Sequelae?

The primary sequelae of scarlet fever include pneumonia, endocarditis, myocarditis, and suppurative tonsillitis. Symptoms of pharyngitis may persist, while the main manifestations of pneumonia include cough, sputum production, chest pain, dyspnea, chest tightness, and wheezing. Endocarditis and myocarditis may also present with chest pain, as well as generalized myalgia and arthralgia, fatigue, dizziness, headache, and fever. Suppurative tonsillitis may cause sore throat, nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, and cervical lymphadenopathy. These are common sequelae of scarlet fever. If such symptoms occur, anti-infective therapy is required—typically for at least 7 to 14 days—to achieve full recovery.

Individuals with scarlet fever should be avoided as much as possible. Do not share the same room, nor personal items (e.g., utensils, towels, or bedding). Ensure frequent ventilation of living spaces. Avoid shared meals; instead, adopt individualized meal service. Wash clothing and bedding in boiling water and expose them to direct sunlight. Strengthen immunity through a balanced diet rich in vegetables and fruits, adequate hydration, sufficient rest, light meals, and easily digestible foods.

Scarlet fever is typically caused by streptococcal infection. Therefore, children should avoid crowded places whenever possible to minimize exposure to this pathogen. We hope this information is helpful to you!
