How to Treat Chronic Pharyngitis in Pregnant Women
Chronic pharyngitis is a common condition. Although the underlying causes may vary among individuals, the symptoms are generally similar and include a foreign-body sensation in the throat, dryness, pain, itching, and coughing up phlegm. These symptoms can be extremely uncomfortable and are often difficult to resolve completely. So, how should chronic pharyngitis be managed during pregnancy?
Management of Chronic Pharyngitis During Pregnancy
For pregnant women with chronic pharyngitis, physical and non-pharmacological therapies are recommended. First, maintaining a positive mental state is essential—avoid frequent anger or anxiety, which may lead to liver qi stagnation and subsequent invasion of the throat, resulting in a persistent foreign-body sensation (i.e., the feeling that something is stuck in the throat yet cannot be swallowed or expectorated). Second, establishing regular sleep-wake patterns is crucial; avoid staying up late or overexertion, as these may deplete yin blood and contribute to yin deficiency with hyperactive fire, manifesting as throat dryness, pain, and a burning sensation. Third, adopt scientifically sound dietary habits: avoid overeating, spicy or greasy foods (which may irritate the throat), and instead consume more fresh vegetables to supplement vitamins, and drink ample warm water to support mucosal recovery and alleviate symptoms of chronic pharyngitis.

Pregnant women often experience relative constitutional weakness, and pharyngitis may adversely affect both maternal health and fetal development. In such cases, increasing fluid intake is highly advisable. Herbal teas made from ingredients such as Sterculia lychnophora (fat sea bean), honeysuckle flower, Ophiopogon japonicus (dwarf lilyturf tuber), and Siraitia grosvenorii (monk fruit) can effectively relieve throat discomfort. Gargling with mild saline solution each morning may also help alleviate symptoms. If swallowing is uncomfortable or appetite is poor, soothing congees—such as cauliflower congee, coix seed congee, or preserved egg and lean pork congee—can be consumed, as they possess throat-moistening and heat-clearing properties.

Pregnant women should maintain a light, easily digestible diet and consume abundant fresh vegetables to effectively ease discomfort. We hope this information proves helpful.
