Prothrombin time (PT) reflects both the liver’s synthetic and reserve functions, as well as the severity of hepatic pathology and prognosis. If a shortened PT is caused by oral contraceptive use, it is generally not harmful, and improvement typically occurs upon discontinuation of the medication. However, if it results from thromboembolic disease or a hypercoagulable state, the condition poses significant risks and requires prompt, standardized treatment.
