Is lower limb swelling caused by venous valve dysfunction?
Disease description:
Today, I visited my father and was told that his lower limbs have been swollen all week. Could this lower-limb swelling be due to venous valve dysfunction?
Incompetence of the arterial and venous valves in the lower limbs can cause edema in the affected limb. However, lower-limb edema may also result from other conditions, such as coronary artery disease with chronic heart failure, or hepatic or renal disorders. It is advisable to consult a physician at a hospital for a comprehensive evaluation, including color Doppler ultrasound of both lower limbs, liver and kidney function tests, brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) assay, and echocardiography, to determine the underlying cause and guide targeted treatment.
