What is the standard amniotic fluid index?
Disease description:
Pregnant women need to undergo regular prenatal checkups. Each ultrasound report includes a measurement called the amniotic fluid index (AFI). Could you please tell me what the standard AFI value is?
The amniotic fluid index (AFI) is the sum of the vertical depths of amniotic fluid measured in four quadrants of the uterus; the normal value is greater than 8 cm. Generally, polyhydramnios is diagnosed when the AFI is ≥250 mm (i.e., ≥25 cm), while oligohydramnios is defined as an AFI ≤5 cm. Amniotic fluid provides space essential for fetal growth, development, and movement; its volume also reflects the health status of both the mother and the fetus. When amniotic fluid volume is low, pregnant women may increase their intake of soy milk or coconut water.
