What is the standard for the amniotic fluid index?
Disease description:
I went to the hospital today for my prenatal checkup, and the color Doppler ultrasound showed an amniotic fluid index (AFI) of 10. What is the standard range for the amniotic fluid index?
There are two standard reference values for amniotic fluid: the first is the amniotic fluid index (AFI), and the second is the maximum vertical pocket (MVP) depth. Under normal conditions, the AFI ranges from 8 to 18 cm. An AFI less than 5 cm indicates oligohydramnios, which may lead to fetal intrauterine hypoxia and distress. An AFI greater than 25 cm suggests polyhydramnios, warranting further evaluation for potential fetal anomalies or maternal hyperglycemia.
