What disease does the attenuated Japanese encephalitis vaccine prevent?
Disease description:
I reviewed your baby’s vaccination record and noticed it’s time for the Japanese encephalitis live attenuated vaccine. Could you please tell me which disease this vaccine is intended to prevent?
The attenuated Japanese encephalitis vaccine is primarily used to prevent Japanese encephalitis (also known as epidemic Japanese encephalitis). It is classified as a Category I vaccine under China’s national immunization program and is provided free of charge. Infants should receive one dose at 8 months of age and another dose after reaching 2 years of age. Epidemic Japanese encephalitis predominantly occurs during spring and summer and is transmitted through mosquito bites; severe cases may lead to central nervous system infection.
