Disease description:

My father was recently diagnosed with gout. He used to enjoy eating king oyster mushrooms, but he has largely stopped eating them since his diagnosis. I would like to ask: Is it safe for people with gout to eat king oyster mushrooms?

Doctor's answer (1)
Dr. Liu Aihua
People with gout should avoid eating king oyster mushrooms, as they contain a certain amount of purines, which may exacerbate the condition. In early-stage gout, some individuals may be asymptomatic; however, others may develop gouty arthritis, characterized by swelling or pain in multiple joints. Without timely treatment, joint stiffness (ankylosis) may occur. After diagnosis, patients must follow their physician’s instructions and take uric acid–lowering medications to achieve effective control and treatment. Additionally, avoid seafood such as fish and shellfish in daily life, as these foods may worsen the condition. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health!
