Can patients with gout eat peanuts?
Disease description:
I’ve been feeling unwell these past few days—my gout has flared up. Yet, I really crave peanuts. May I ask: Can people with gout eat peanuts?
Gout patients should limit their intake of peanuts. Peanuts are classified as a moderate-purine food. During gout flare-ups, physicians typically recommend a strict low-purine diet. High-purine foods include alcoholic beverages, organ meats, seafood, and commonly consumed carbonated soft drinks. Although peanuts are not considered high-purine foods, they contain nearly 90 mg of purines per 100 g; thus, they fall into the moderate-purine category. During the acute phase of gout, patients are advised to adhere as closely as possible to a low-purine diet—such as increasing fluid intake and consuming more eggs, milk, vegetables, and fruits.
