My father used to enjoy eating peanuts as a snack with alcohol. However, he was recently diagnosed with gout and has since stopped eating peanuts. I’d like to ask: Can patients with gout eat peanuts?

Dr. Pan Yongyuan
Gout patients can consume peanuts, but only in moderation. Additionally, they should avoid eating peanuts during acute gout attacks. During the intercritical period—when serum uric acid levels are well-controlled—patients may consume small amounts of peanuts. Peanuts are a type of nut and contain purines; however, their purine content is relatively low compared with other high-purine foods such as organ meats, seafood, various meats, meat broths, and hotpot soup.
