Disease description:

I had an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted recently, and I’ve been experiencing abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding lately. I’m concerned this might be caused by pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Can inserting an IUD lead to PID?

Insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD) generally does not cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). However, PID may be triggered if the procedure is performed improperly. PID can also be induced by poor personal hygiene or unprotected/unhygienic sexual activity. If a patient experiences prolonged, localized vaginal bleeding or increased vaginal discharge, prompt gynecological evaluation and examination are recommended.
