Disease description:

I’ve recently been working in the Department of Infectious Diseases and noticed many people undergoing HIV antibody testing. A number of them initially experienced symptoms but paid no attention to them. As I’m not very familiar with this topic, I’d like to ask: What is the incubation period for early-stage HIV infection?

A period of 2 to 4 weeks. The incubation period refers to the time interval between infection and the onset of overt clinical manifestations; it typically lasts 6–8 years. The duration of the incubation period varies depending on individual immune status and the virulence of the virus entering the body. However, most patients do not experience symptoms during the acute phase, leading to easy oversight; they then enter a prolonged asymptomatic phase. Consequently, many individuals mistakenly consider the 5–8-year asymptomatic period as the incubation period.
