Most patients do not require a patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pump after tonsillectomy. Tonsil surgery causes relatively minimal trauma to the body and is typically brief in duration. Prior to surgery, general anesthesia is administered to ensure pain-free surgery. Consequently, a PCA pump is usually unnecessary postoperatively. However, for patients who are particularly sensitive to pain, a PCA pump may be considered to help alleviate postoperative discomfort.
