Can patients with systemic lupus erythematosus nephritis eat broad beans?
Disease description:
My father has lupus nephritis. He recently wants to eat broad beans—can patients with lupus nephritis consume broad beans?
If the patient has systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and the disease is well-controlled, renal function remains intact, and fava beans may be consumed safely. However, if the patient already has kidney impairment or exhibits intolerance to fava beans, consumption is not recommended. Fava beans are highly nutritious, containing abundant protein, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, calcium, and iron. Patients with known fava bean allergy, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency (“favism”), or other hereditary red blood cell disorders should avoid fava beans at all times.
