Trachoma primarily manifests as a foreign-body sensation, tearing, conjunctival injection (redness), increased mucoid discharge, and decreased vision. During the acute phase, topical ophthalmic solutions and ointments can be used to alleviate these uncomfortable symptoms. Severe cases require systemic (oral) antimicrobial therapy. After several weeks, the disease may progress to the chronic phase—particularly following repeated episodes—and ultimately become chronic. At this stage, the condition tends to stabilize, though intermittent discomfort—such as ocular soreness or a foreign-body sensation—may still occur.
