What does “sinus bradycardia” mean, and is it serious?
Disease description:
I’ve been having trouble sleeping for the past couple of nights. After visiting the hospital for a checkup, the doctor diagnosed me with sinus bradycardia. I’d like to know: What exactly is sinus bradycardia, and is it serious?
Sinus bradycardia remains within the normal rhythm range and is not considered severe; it is simply characterized by a slow heart rate—less than 60 beats per minute (bpm). In adults, a normal sinus heart rate typically ranges from 60 to 100 bpm. A heart rate exceeding 100 bpm is termed sinus tachycardia, whereas a rate below 60 bpm is classified as sinus bradycardia. The speed of the sinus rhythm is directly related to an individual’s metabolic state and can be categorized as either physiological or pathological. Physiological sinus bradycardia may result from excessive fatigue, while pathological sinus bradycardia may be caused by conditions such as myocarditis.
