Dr. Liu Guoqing
Hello, hypokalemia can cause severe complications. The earliest manifestation is muscle weakness; in severe cases, patients may be unable to get out of bed or move at all. Moreover, the heart is especially vulnerable—severe hypokalemia can disrupt ventricular rhythm regulation, leading to life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias that may resemble cardiac arrest. Without prompt resuscitation and potassium supplementation, this condition can be fatal. Potassium chloride is available both as an oral tablet and as an intravenous formulation. When administering it, strict precautions must be observed: it is absolutely contraindicated in patients with anuria (absence of urine output) or hyperkalemia (elevated serum potassium levels). We hope the above information is helpful to you. Wishing you a happy and healthy life!
