Are oral herpes and genital herpes the same condition?
Disease description:
I have developed oral herpes, but my friend keeps saying it’s genital herpes—I’m a bit worried. Are oral herpes and genital herpes the same condition?
Oral herpes and genital herpes are not the same condition. Although both diseases are caused by herpes virus infections, they involve different viral subtypes. Oral herpes is typically caused by infection with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), whereas genital herpes is usually caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Treatment should be individualized according to the patient’s specific clinical presentation; empirical or indiscriminate treatment is not recommended.
