My colleague was diagnosed with restless legs syndrome (RLS) a few days ago. Could this be due to prolonged sitting in the office? He’s only 37 years old—what causes RLS?

Hello, Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is characterized by uncomfortable sensations in the legs—commonly described as aching, heaviness, tightness, or swelling. These sensations typically occur when at rest, prompting an irresistible urge to move the legs for relief; hence the term “restless legs.” RLS significantly disrupts sleep: many affected individuals experience leg discomfort at bedtime, making it difficult to fall asleep or causing frequent awakenings, thereby impairing both sleep quality and duration. Consequently, daytime functioning may be compromised, and medical treatment is often warranted. To help manage symptoms, avoid staying up late at night, maintain regular sleep–wake schedules, and limit prolonged use of smartphones or computers—especially in the evening. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health!
