Disease description:
My baby caught a cold a few days ago and is still taking medication. Over the past two days, pus has started draining from the ear—this is likely acute otitis media. I’d like to consult about how to treat otitis media in children.
Children with otitis media are typically treated via intravenous (IV) fluid administration, local ear irrigation, or surgery. In severe cases of pediatric otitis media—particularly when there is substantial purulent discharge from the middle ear—IV antibiotic therapy may be considered, as it offers rapid and thorough treatment. Concurrently, the external auditory canal may be irrigated with hydrogen peroxide solution. If medical management alone proves ineffective, tympanocentesis or myringotomy with tube placement may be performed.
