Can Sjögren's syndrome cause hair loss?
Disease description:
My friend was recently diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome. But lately, I've noticed her hair is thinning. Could this be caused by the condition? I'd like to know—can Sjögren's syndrome cause hair loss?
Sjögren's syndrome can cause hair loss, but the degree of hair loss is usually mild. Hair loss in Sjögren's syndrome is generally due to skin and mucous membrane damage caused by chronic disease of exocrine glands, commonly seen in middle-aged women. Hair loss may also occur as a side effect of medications such as cyclophosphamide; this type of hair loss gradually improves as the medication dose is reduced, with new hair growth occurring. Once the disease is under control, hair loss caused by disease activity will also gradually resolve, accompanied by regrowth of new hair.
