What is a cruciate ligament tear?
Disease description:
Dad was hit by an electric scooter and is experiencing knee pain. After going to the hospital for a checkup, he was diagnosed with a ruptured cruciate ligament. What does a torn cruciate ligament mean?
There are many causes of cruciate ligament rupture. The first is when direct force is applied to the front of the lower leg during knee flexion, resulting in excessive stretching of the medial cruciate ligament and leading to a tear of the cruciate ligament. Additionally, if a patient twists their body during a fall, it may cause excessive rotation of the knee joint, which can also result in tearing of the cruciate ligaments within the knee. After a cruciate ligament tear, the knee joint typically exhibits significant swelling, pain, and restricted range of motion in flexion and extension.
