It can cause severe pain, limited mobility, obvious tenderness, swelling, bruising, and inability to bend the joint. Intense pain occurs at the site of ligament rupture. Cold compresses or oral pain relievers should be used to alleviate the pain. The severity of these symptoms is directly related to the extent of ligament tear. Some patients may present with accompanying ligament rupture and joint effusion. In cases of ligament rupture, prompt orthopedic evaluation at a hospital is necessary, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the joint to confirm the diagnosis.
