Mild anal fissures in infants can heal on their own. Hard stools and excessive straining during bowel movements may cause the anus to tear, resulting in an anal fissure. Infants with mild fissures should eat more vegetables, fruit purees, and drink plenty of water to soften the stool and promote smooth bowel movements. Most pediatric anal fissures improve and resolve with conservative treatment; however, if there is no improvement, prompt medical evaluation at a hospital is recommended.
