Etiology of ankle osteoarthritis
Disease description:
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease primarily caused by various factors leading to the degradation and damage of joint cartilage. It is also known as osteoarthrosis, senile arthritis, degenerative arthritis, etc. What then are the causes of ankle osteoarthritis?
The cause of ankle osteoarthritis is ankle sprain. An ankle sprain typically damages the lateral ligaments of the ankle, and when these ligaments heal poorly, it leads to ankle instability—commonly known as habitual ankle sprains. Chronic lateral ankle instability can result in varus deformity of the talus, which subsequently triggers osteoarthritis, causing ankle pain and swelling and limiting range of motion. Patients are advised to avoid foods high in sugar, fat, and greasy foods.
