Disease description:

My menstrual cycle was quite regular before, but recently over the past six months, my period has been coming once every two months. I'm a bit worried that there might be some underlying illness. Is it normal to have a period once every two months?

It is generally not normal for menstruation to occur once every two months. In females who have just started menstruating, having a period once every two months may be due to the reproductive axis not being fully developed yet; in such cases, observation without intervention is acceptable. However, in perimenopausal women, delayed ovulation due to declining ovarian function may cause this pattern. It is advisable to go to the hospital for an ultrasound to assess the thickness of the endometrium. If the endometrium is found to be thick, progesterone should be taken to induce menstruation and prevent endometrial hyperplasia.
