I've been experiencing frequent itching and some pain in the external genital area these past few days, and I'd like to know what might be causing this.

Itching and pain in the vulva may be caused by vaginitis, which usually results from inflammation leading to edema and congestion of the vulvar mucosa. This inflammatory irritation can cause the aforementioned symptoms. It could also be folliculitis, typically caused by bacterial infection of the hair follicles in the vulvar area. Additionally, if a patient has an allergic reaction in the vulvar region, this may also lead to itching and pain.
