Is ascites due to liver disease contagious?
Disease description:
The child's grandmother has been diagnosed with hepatic ascites. I don't really understand what this condition is, but I'd like to ask: Is hepatic ascites contagious?
Liver ascites itself is not contagious; however, if liver ascites is caused by chronic hepatitis B virus infection, it can be infectious. Ascites mainly results from conditions such as hypoalbuminemia, excessive lymphatic fluid production, or increased portal venous pressure, which impair liver function and lead to fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity. In general, ascites is not contagious. However, when ascites is due to hepatitis B virus infection, it carries a certain risk of transmission.
