Menstrual flow may increase after insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD). After IUD placement, the uterus requires an adjustment period. During the first three months following insertion, menstrual volume often increases and vaginal bleeding may occur. A common side effect of IUDs is irregular vaginal bleeding, primarily characterized by increased menstrual flow, prolonged menstrual cycles, or light spotting. If heavy menstrual bleeding persists for up to six months after insertion, the IUD may need to be removed and replaced with another type.
